Mining operations in Eastern Coalfield's underground Jhanjra coal mine project were briefly halted after smoke was detected in its water evacuation system.

"Smoke was detected in the water evacuation system last night due to overheating due to some glitch and soon after mining operations was stopped to ensure complete safety of workers," ECL technical director to CMD Niladri Roy told PTI.

"There was no effect in the mining area due to this but we decided to stop mining till the mechanical glitch at the water evacuation system was rectified. We expect to resume mining soon," Roy said.

Jhanjra, a large underground coal mine, is a highly mechanized mine in the country and currently producing 4500 tonne of coal.

Jhanjra block is located in the north-eastern side of Raniganj Coalfield in West Bengal.
