Vishwajeet Niyogi, resident of West Bengal, was arrested yesterday when he was waiting for a train with two bags full of tortoises near a cycle stand at the railway station, GRP station officer Tripurari Pandey said.

He was later handed over to Forest department officials.

During interrogation, Niyogi told police that he had purchased the tortoises from near the river Ganga for Rs 170 per bag.

However, it is suspected that the accused has smuggled the tortoises from a sanctuary near the river, Pandey said.

Last year also eight persons were arrested and eight bags full of tortoises were recovered from them, he said.
