Two brothers, who were allegedly involved in around 98 cases of snatching of gold chains and other valuables in the national capital, have been arrested, police said today.
The brothers, Rajesh alias Dil Dil (36) and Ajay alias Gainda (28), had given a slip to policemen few days ago and were arrested yesterday from a hotel in Punjab's Ropar district, they said.
They were earlier arrested under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and kept under judicial custody for six years until 2013.
"For the last few months, a spurt was noticed in the incidents of robbery and snatching in South-East district and police teams were formed to put a check on it," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Mandeep Randhawa.
A team of policemen in plain clothes had a few days ago tried to stop two persons on motorcycle near a mall in Jasola, but they managed sped away. But police noted down registration number of the motorcycle.
After some days, police came to know about a snatching by two motorcycle riders in Sarita Vihar and found that it had the same registration number they had noted earlier.
Following which, a search was launched and the motorcycle was noticed at a traffic signal in Madanpur Khadar. The cops gave a chase and when they reached a street at JJ Colony, they found the motorcycle parked there, the officer said.
Through the motorcycle's registration number, police traced Rajesh and launched technical surveillance to pinpoint his location.
The duo told the police that Rajesh had broken his legs while jumping from one terrace to another while escaping from the police team who chased them a few days ago.
"A total of 98 cases of snatching and robbery were cracked with their arrest. While Rajesh was found involved in 67 snatching his brother has been linked to 44 cases. They were also captured in CCTV footage collected by police in connection with chain snatching incidents," he added.
