In a politically significant move, leader of Kerala's numerically strong Ezhava community Vellapally Natesan today met BJP president Amit Shah and discussed with him the "political situation" in the state.
Vellapally, who is the General Secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, the social organisation of Ezhavas in Kerala, discussed the problems faced by the majority Hindu community in the state and sought their unity.
He discussed political issues pertaining to the state with Shah and later said the organisation was ready to work with anyone who would protect the interests of Hindus.
"Why should there be untouchability towards BJP, which is the ruling party of the country? In Kerala, we want unity of majority community, because other political forces are ignoring the cause of the majority community," he said after the meeting.
He said while SNDP members have in the past contested local polls as candidates of different parties, there was no problem of people contesting from BJP.
Vellapally was in the national capital to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the unveiling of the statue of R Shankar in Kerala. Since Prime Minister cancelled his appointments due to the demise of former President A P J Abdul Kalam, Vellapally decided to meet the BJP chief.
He was accompanied by his son Tushar Vellapally, who is the vice president of the SNDP.
"We discussed the problems faced by the majority community in Kerala. We feel that the majority community should unite," Tushar told PTI.
He, however, made it clear that SNDP Yogam had no plans to form a political outfit.
"There is no possibility of any tie-up with BJP as of now," he said.
