He, however, stuck to his demand for action against the perpetrators.
"I have cancelled the proposed protest padayatra after the chief minister talked to me over phone and on request by many in the leadership," Chattopadhyay, who has been associated with the party since its inception in 1998, said.
Senior party leader and panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee and commerce minister Partha Chatterjee also contacted him, he said.
"I told the chief minister that the incident is condemnable and the party should condemn it and take appropriate action," Chattopadhyay, the government chief whip, said.
"I asked everyone, who contacted me, to condemn the assault as it is a condemnable incident," he said.
"I strongly believe that the party will take appropriate action against, if not, I will think over the issue once again.

"I am still a loyal soldier of the party, a sincere worker and legislator for quite some years," he added.
To a question, Chattopadhyay said he had not lodged any written complaint with the party leadership.
Chattopadhyay was allegedly assaulted by members of of the Trinamool-backed employees' union in Calcutta University on November 20 when he went to meet the vice-chancellor.
He had yesterday said he had nothing personal against the Trinamool Congress chief or the party, but wanted the party to take action.
He had also said he was not leaving the party immediately, but if he could not remain with respect and protection then he would have to think of his future course of action.
