A spokesman of the Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FRIENDS) welcomed the present check for illegal migrants by police and contended that introduction of ILP system was required as entry of outsiders seeking work caused demographic change in the state.

The spokesman said the ILP system in force in neighbouring Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh should be introduced in Manipur also.

Referring to the recent violence in Assam, he said if the inflow to Manipur is not checked, such incidents could occur in this state also.

Official sources said police were checking entry of illegal migrants and so far about 100 from Bangladesh and Myanmar have been pushed back while trying to cross into Manipur without valid documents.

Checking for illegal migrant workers would continue in the state, sources said.
