Describing Tamil saint-poet, Thiruvalluvar as a genius philosopher, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi today said his couplets in Thirukkural were related to nature and how societal behaviours were well represented and reflected in animals and in other objects and also made their significance in the modern world.
Delivering the 17th Edition of Salim Ali Memorial Lecture 2014-15, here, on the topic 'Nature Themes in Thirukkural,' Gandhi stressed the relevance of the Sangham literature in the present day modern 'development oriented World.'
Thiruvalluvar was a keen observer of nature and a genius philosopher where he made several events and objects of nature in describing the anthropogenic perspective, he said, adding, 'Thirukkural teaches us the basic quality of life.'

He said his favourite couplet in the Thirukkural is regarding 'help-one man help other'.
The lecture was organised by Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, which was attended by researchers and students from various universities and colleges, scientists, forest officers, air force officers and members of NGOs.
