"Solar energy cannot be an effective alternative to the traditional thermal and hydel power unless its production cost is drastically reduced. Scientists should device ways for making solar power affordable," he said.
The Governor was speaking after inaugurating the 'Andhra Pradesh Science Congress' at Acharya Nagarjuna University campus near here.
Referring to scientific inventions, he underscored the need to take their benefit to villages.
Narasimhan also called upon scientists to ensure that the cost of medical treatment is made affordable to the common man. "If medical treatment is within the reach of only the rich, it serves no purpose."
He said industrialisation should be eco-friendly. "Industries which pollute environment should be shunned."
Scientific Advisor to the Defence Ministry, V K Sarswat, gave an account of India's preparedness to defend its borders from invasion by land, sea and air.
Sarswat was honoured on the occasion and presented with Dr Y Nayudamma Memorable Gold medal.
