Naik Rajesh Verma of First Para of Indian Army was killed during a search operation in Kishtwar of Doda district on April 30 and his mortal remains were brought to his native village Majra last evening.
A pall of gloom descended on on the village and thousands of villagers rushed to his house to pay their homage.
Verma's five-year-old son lit the pyre at the local cremation ground.
Verma joined army in 2000 and was awarded Shourya Chakra for his exemplary bravery, courage and presence of mind during an operation launched against the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir in 2002. PTI CORR PCL
