Scores of professionals, academicians and scientists held a march to express solidarity with the students of Jadavpur University, who were allegedly beaten up by the police, and demanded resignation of the university's Vice-Chancellor.

A number of IT professionals, scientists, teachers and engineers, many of whom are ex-students of JU, participated in the march holding candles last evening and condemned the police action on students protesting peacefully on university campus.

The protesters demanded resignation of VC Abhijit Chakraborty since "all stakeholders have lost faith in him," and setting up of an independent and impartial probe committee to inquire into the incident of molestation.

They also demanded enhancement of security and restoration of academic environment on the campus.

The participants were seen holding placards, posters and banners to express solidarity with the university students.

"We are upset and anguished over the incidents that occurred on the campus of our alma mater," said Mithun Ranjit, an IT professional who participated in the rally.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad chapter of Jadavpur University Alumni Association has also sent a letter to the West Bengal Governor and varsity's Chancellor K N Tripathi demanding the VC's resignation.
