Somnath describes political situation in Bengal 'suffocating'

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today described the political situation in West Bengal as "suffocating".

"In this state of West Bengal we have been thrown into a politics of violence. The way the state machinery is being run people are forced to keep off from politics," Chatterjee said at a meeting by the Birbhum district Left Front.

"We are now passing through a suffocating situation," the former CPI(M) leader said alleging people have no democratic rights.

Chatterjee further alleged, that through unprecedented "State-sponsored torture" and by applying administrative power, "The rule of party" has been thrust on the masses citing incidents in recent time, but did not elaborate.
