The son of an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) was today arrested for allegedly administering a wrong injection to a seven-year-old boy which led his death.

Swagat Das (27) was apprehended from Khallikote railway station in connection with the death of Aditya Barada, a Class II student, due to wrong injection on Sunday, said inspector in-charge of Khallikote police station Bivekananda Swain.

The boy had injured his leg and had been taken to the ANM for primary treatment.

In the absence of his mother, Das administered the injection to the boy for relief from pain, police said quoting the complaint lodged by the boy's family.

His mother, Manorama Bindhani, who was in Balasore at that time, had allegedly asked her son when he called her up over phone to administer the injection.

Barada then started vomiting and fell unconscious and was declared brought dead at the hospital, the complaint said.

Das had been on the run since the incident, Swain said.

The ANM has been suspended by Ganjam Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Manoj Kumar Behera at the direction of District Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary yesterday.

The CDMO has also asked the medical officer in Khallikote to inquire into the matter, officials said.
