Bollywood fashionista Sonam Kapoor today opened the capital's first ever India International Jewellery week (IIJW).

Kapoor, who is the brand ambassador of Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), inaugurated the two-day event by lighting the traditional lamp along with the chairman of GJEPC Vipul Shah and Member of Parliament Subodh Kant Sahay.

"I have been the brand ambassador for GJEPC for four years now. I love jewellery especially gems. India is the biggest exporter of gems and jewellery in the world. I think it is incredible that we get to endorse the jewellery industry of India because it does so well. I want to make sure that we can export more, and we flourish more," Kapoor said.

The 27-year-old actress wore a red and white ensemble by her designer Anamika Khanna and teamed it up with intricate jewellery.

The diva also walked the ramp with the jewellery tycoons of India at the inauguration ceremony.

When asked what is her favourite piece of jewellery, Sonam said she loves her solitaires that she bought two years ago.

"It is my solitaires that I bought. I adore them. I bought them from a jeweller in Delhi. They are 3 carats. I got them two years ago," Kapoor said.

IIJW will see celebrities like Zeenat Aman, Juhi Chawla, Ankita Shorey, Shriya Saran, Yami Gautam, Lara Dutta, Chitrangada Singh and others walk the ramp for the leading jewellery brands of the country.

"Jewellery week is being held in the capital for the first time. It is a natural progression from Mumbai to Delhi as Delhi is the fashion, affluence and high life capital of India. It is also a major jewellery hub. The jewellery week is the only such week in Asia which will showcase 17 designers," said Shah.
