Sonia, Rahul condole demise of Manipur MP

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi today condoled the demise of Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur Haji Abdul Salam.

Remembering Salam's contribution, Gandhi said that in his death, Manipur has lost an outstanding leader and representative of the state.

"Saddened by the demise of Haji Abdul Salam. A veteran Congressman & committed social worker, he served the people of Manipur with dedication," Rahul tweeted.

Salam passed away in Imphal last night following a brief illness, family members said. He was 69.

Salam was the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of the House of States from Manipur. He had been representing the state in the Upper House since 2014.
 

Meanwhile, the Congress president condoled the demise of writer and humorist Taarakbhai Mehta.

Remembering him as a "literary genius", Sonia said, "Taarakbhai, through his writings, took Gujarati literature to new heights. He championed human values of peace, happiness and social harmony.
