Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that instances of offences against SCs and STs in the state is very less but proper implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 must be ensured.
Awareness campaigns must be initiated at the district level so that people of all communities are empowered to lead a life of dignity, Sonowal said here today chairing the first meeting of State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee constituted for implementation of the Act.
"People belonging to all sections of the society must be empowered to live a life of dignity and SC/ST community members must get their due respect," he said.
He urged MLAs and public representatives belonging to SC/ST communities to communicate with the government if any atrocity takes place anywhere.
The chief minister also called for better coordination between the various departments for proper implementation of the Act.
