Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed that a separate road be constructed for South Salmara-Mankachar district without passing through the territory of neighbouring Meghalaya.

The Chief Minister has issued a directive to the PWD (Roads) and Water Resources Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for construction of the road as "South Salmara-Mankachar district should have exclusive road connectivity through the state of Assam without touching territory of any other state."

He asked the department concerned to engage in preparation of the DPR and submit it to the government within October 2.

"After the DPR is prepared we will go for construction of the once defunct road through the territory of Assam. One of the priorities of our governance lies in ensuring seamless communication for the people of South Salmara Mankachar district and that too through our own territory," the Chief Minister's Office quoted Sonowal in a release.

Sonowal, who recently visited the Indo-Bangla border in South Salmara-Mankachar district, also asked the Power department to make good use of the allotted power to the district and take steps for replacement of redundant transformers.

For providing safe and purified drinking water, he asked the PHE department to operationalise all its schemes and submit an action taken report to the government "on a fast track" basis, the release added.
