Launching a pilot project of the Guwahati Traffic Police (GTP), Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said a smart police force is of paramount importance to cope with modern day law and order challenges.
Modernisation of Guwahati Traffic Police has been initiated through this pilot project, Sonowal said launching the project at a function here.
Altogether 200 newly inducted traffic constables from different units of Assam Police have been trained as part of the pilot project and are provided new uniforms keeping in mind the weather condition of the city.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on building smart police forces, Sonowal said smart police will be a reality in the state and a smart police force will be able to handle modern law and order challenges.
He urged upon all police personnel in the state to be more humane in delivering their duty and become friends with the public in their times of need.
Guwahati is going to be the "gateway to South East Asia" and not remain only the gateway to the Northeast as the increased infrastructure developmental activities under the Act East Policy of Prime Minster Narendra Modi will catapult the city to global centre-stage soon, Sonowal said.
In the changed scenario, the city police, including traffic police, must gear up to guide the visitors to the city and help them explore Guwahati, the Chief Minister said.
Commenting that Assam Police has always been appreciated by the public for their dedication and sincerity, Sonowal said they must uphold their reputation by performing duties with honesty and enable all citizens to lead a life of dignity.
