Sonowal participates in IYD at Majuli

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal led the state in observing International Yoga Day (IYD) at Majuli, the world's largest river island.

Sonowal, who was elected from Majuli to the state Assembly in the recently held polls, participated in the main function in the river island along with Education and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jorhat's BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tassa, government officials, school and college students and his party members.

"The observance of International Yoga Day will surely go a long way in spreading awareness and creating consciousness among the people towards inculcating this physical, mental and spiritual practice in their lives," Sonowal said after the event.
 

Elaborate arrangements were made in the river island and people came from far and wide to participate since early morning.

Yoga camps were held across the state at all district and sub-divisional headquarters and people braved incessant rains in many parts to ensure their participation, official sources said here.

In Guwahati, the day was observed at the Nehru Stadium here under the aegis of the Kamrup (Metro) district administration.

The day was also observed by the Kamrup (Rural) district administration at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Amingaon in association with the Institute of Yoga and Nutrition Sciences and Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Industry and Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary participated in the yoga camp at Gordon High School in Nalbari where large number of people came out to participate despite heavy rainfall in the area.
