Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday released funds worth over Rs 29 crore, as the first instalment for construction of 2,643 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (Urban).

Sonowal disbursed the amount to the beneficiaries residing in areas under different urban local bodies of the state, at a function here.

The CM said the PMAY(U) is committed to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of housing-for-all by 2022.

He said though the previous government had launched Indira Awaas Yojna for providing houses to the underprivileged rural population, "rampant corruption" hampered its implementation.

"PMAY(U) has covered the urban poor, who were overlooked by the IAY, besides ensuring proper construction of the houses," Sonowal said.

Under the PMAY(U), the capital subsidy of Rs 2 lakh is released in three instalments of Rs 1,10,000, Rs 60,000 and Rs 30,000.

The chief minister added that the Centre has so far sanctioned 95,556 PMAY(U) houses in the state, out of which, 35,000 beneficiaries have already received instalments and started construction of houses.
