Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that the state government would take stern action against anti-social elements trying to destroy the age-old secular fabric of the state.

"It has come to the notice of the government that certain anti-social elements are trying to foment trouble in the state by destroying the existing social harmony but we will take stern measures to thwart such attempts", Sonowal said in a statement here.

The government welcomes any criticism democratically but "threat of weapons was a challenge to a democratic society and any attempt to intimidate the established system will be dealt with sternly," he said.

He appealed to the people to remain vigilant against such anti-national forces and maintain peace and harmony.

"There can be development only when there is peace and harmony in the state", the Chief Minister added.
