South African woman held for trying to smuggle out drugs

A South African woman was today arrested from Mumbai international airport for allegedly trying to smuggle out 16 kgs of Ephedrine drug worth Rs 3.20 crore to Ethiopia, a Customs official said.

According to Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs, the lady passenger holding South African passport was to depart to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on ET- 611, an Ethiopian Airlines flight early morning when she was intercepted following the signals by a drug-detecting sniffer dog, the official added.

"After a thorough checking, 16 kgs of Ephedrine drug worth Rs 3.20 crore was recovered from her," the official told PTI adding that the contraband was concealed inside cardboard packets wrapped in lace by the accused.
 

The accused, whose name was not disclosed by the officials, arrived here with the contraband from Delhi on a flight by hoodwinking the security agencies at national capital's domestic airport, the official said.
