Seat-sharing woes between the Samajwadi Party and Congress have come to the fore in Kanpur with the two parties haggling over three prominent assembly seats in the city.

The Samajwadi Party has fielded candidates for all five seats in the city, but according to Congress, they are supposed to fight the Cantt, Kidwai Nagar and Govind Nagar seats as per the agreement between the two parties.

Congressman Ajay Kapoor is the sitting MLA from Kidwai Nagar. During the 2012 Assembly polls, the party had come second in Govind Nagar, and third from Cantt.

SP's candidate from Cantt, Hasan Rumi said he had no knowledge of the seat being alloted to Congress. "I have been given the party symbol and have filed my nomination papers. I have also started full-fledged electioneering," he said.

It is a similar story in Kidwai Nagar as well.

SP's Om Prakash Mishra, who had come third during the last assembly elections, has been again fielded as the party's official candidate. Despite sitting congress MLA Ajay Kapoor filing his nomination papers, Mishra said, "I do not know what seat has been given to Congress as per the seat sharing agreement. All I know is that I am the SP's candidate from this seat and have started my election campaign."

The fate of the Govind Nagar seat is also uncertain with Congress pitching Ambuj Shukla as its candidate, while SP's Yogesh Kushwaha has already embarked on electioneering.
