A top district police officer today dismissed the allegations levelled by a local BJP leader that a senior member of the party was involved in drug racket, saying there was "no authenticity" in it.

District BJP general secretary Gurdeep Singh Deepa had on Tuesday alleged that a senior BJP leader was involved in drug trade.

Phagwara Superintendent of Police Ashwani Kumar said he had verified the allegation levelled by Deepa and found that there was no authenticity in it.

Kumar claimed he had called and quizzed Deepa, who had made the allegation in a press conference, and he (Deepa) could not give any "clear-cut" answer about it.

He also said he daily holds two meetings in every municipal ward under anti-drug awareness drive and got "no such complaint" against any ruling party leader.

No drug peddler or drug trader, howsoever influential, would be spared and the menace would be curbed, the SP said.

Deepa had said he will disclose the name of the party leader and furnish documentary evidence if the state DGP gave him assurance of action against the drug mafia functioning under the "big gun" of BJP here.

When contacted, Deepa acknowledged that SP had called him to his office but "denied" that anything regarding involvement of a party leader in drug trade had come up during talks.
