Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council through an adjournment notice, BSP members demanded a debate on it.
They alleged that schemes named after saints, gurus and great personalities belonging to downtrodden sections of the society were scrapped or renamed with "vindictive and revengeful attitude".
Leader of the Opposition Naseemuddin Siddiqui alleged that not only the schemes were renamed, but even budgetary allocation reduced.
He alleged that the government planned to rename Arabic, Urdu and Persian University in the name of Kanshiram.
Responding to their concerns, Revenue Minister Ambika Chaudhary said only those schemes which were not needed were being scrapped.
Directives have, however, been issued that incomplete works should be completed before the schemes were scrapped, he said.
The minister said that under Kanshiram Shahri Gareeb Awas Yojna below standard houses were constructed. "These dwellings are dangerous from residential point of view," he said, adding that an inquiry was being conducted.
Chaudhary alleged that during BSP regime funds were diverted affecting development. "A committee has been constituted to look where more than Rs 9,000 crore of district funds went," he said.
He assured the members that the government has no intention of insulting or lowering the dignity of great personalities.
Rejecting the adjournment notice, Chairman Ganesh Shanker Pandey said government should take effective action to complete incomplete schemes.
