Samajwadi Party is in talks with Left parties to forge an alliance as there is a need for like-minded parties to come together to work for the interests of farmers and other marginalised sections of society, SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav said today.

He said he had a discussion with CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today and other Left leaders in this regard.

"In the context of present political situation, there is a need to advance the interests of farmers, labourers, women and poor people. I have had long discussion with Left parties' leaders and spoke to Karat today," he said.

Attacking the UPA government, he said poverty, unemployment and insecure borders are the main concerns for the country today.

In his brief address at an event, Yadav expressed grave concern over the situation on the border and termed India's position "humiliating".

"Some country's army intrudes into our area, moves around and then leaves at their will. We can't reply strongly. It is against our self respect," he said in an apparent reference to Chinese troops' intrusion.

"We have to keep our weapons ready", he said, stressing that a country can be economically strong only when its borders are secured.

He was speaking on the occasion of the release of a 30-minute movie encapsulating his life and his rise from a poor family into one of the country's leading politicians.

SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, MP Jaya Bachchan were also present besides several other party leaders.
