Samajwadi Party will not field a candidate against Congress veteran N D Tiwari if the latter chose to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

An assurance to this effect was given by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav to Tiwari when he met the seasoned leader at his Lucknow residence yesterday, Tiwari's OSD Bhawani Dutt Bhatt said in a release here today.

"Me, my family and my party will stand by Tiwari in whatever decision he takes. If he chooses to enter the fray, Samajwadi Party will not field its candidate against him," the SP chief was quoted as saying.

Mulayam described Tiwari's stature as one which transcends the limitations of party-based politics, and also gave his blessings to the latter's son Rohit Shekhar who was present there with his mother Ujjwala.

Tiwari recently undertook a ten-day tour of Nainital constituency in Uttarakhand along with his son to find out if people wanted him or his son to contest the Lok Sabha polls. However, Congress has already fielded its sitting MP K C Singh Baba from the seat.
