A special court, constituted exclusively for trial of cases against MPs and MLAs, Monday quashed 13 defamation cases filed against late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi by the AIADMK government.

The principal sessions court has transferred all the defamation cases from its file to the special court designated for the purpose.

Special Court Judge J Shanti quashed 13 defamation cases filed against Karunanidhi.

Defamation cases filed against Murasoli Selvam, editor and publisher of the DMK party's mouthpiece 'Murasoli', were also transferred to the special court.

Challenging it, Selvam filed a petition before the Madras High Court stating that he is neither an MLA nor an MP of Tamil Nadu.

He wanted to know why the defamation cases filed against him were transferred to the special court designated exclusively to hear the cases related to MPs and MLAs.
