Special drive for purification of electoral rolls launched

: The election department in Puducherry todaylaunched a special drive for purification of electoral rolls pertaining to all 30 assembly constituencies in the Union Territory ahead of the coming polls.

Chief Electoral officer of Puducherry V Candavelou told reporters here that the drive launched as per instructions of Election Commission would go on till February 29 to remove multiple and duplicate entries of the names of voters or entries of deceased voters.

The drive has been taken up at the level of polling stations.

Candavelou said the department would run constituency wise 'de-duplication software' on the electoral rolls for locating duplicate or multiple entries.
 

The department would procure the lists of names of dead voters from the municipalities or commune panchayats.

Booth level officers would use the list for field verification of voters in association with the booth level agents of political parties.

If multiple entries and entries of deceased persons' names are found true after field verification, the department would suo moto delete the entries in keeping with the provisions of Representation of People's Act 1950 after following due procedure, the CEO said.

Candavelou said the department received a total of 9,641 applications from those who had not registered their names so far, through the special camps held on Feb 7 and 14.

"All the applications seeking inclusion of names are being scrutinized and once found to be in order the names would be included in the rolls," he added.
