A special session of Punjab Assembly would be held on May 3 to discuss the wealth tax imposed by the Centre on farmers owning land within 8-km of urban areas.

SAD party president Sukhbir Singh Badal told the members of party's core committee that each farmer will have to pay wealth tax in the range of Rs 30,000.

The party would now gear up for a " life and death battle to safeguard the interests of the farmers. The Centre's move can lead to serious and extremely alarming consequences," he said.

The move affects about 80 per cent of the population and 100 per cent of the country's economy directly, Sukhbir said.

"This must be stopped," he said.

Giving details of the decisions of the core committee meeting, party leader Harcharan Bains said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has convened a special meeting of the Punjab Council of Ministers tomorrow for the purpose.

A delegation of SAD and BJP MPs, MLAs and other leaders will call on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to express their views on the wealth tax, he said.

A resolution passed at the emergency core committee meeting described the Centre's move to slap wealth tax on agriculture lands as " dangerous and fatal for peasantry and debilitating for national economy," Bains said.
