Special voter enrolment drive in Meghalaya from July 1: EC

The Election Commission today said it will launch a special enrolment drive for about 1 lakh first time electors in the age group of 18 to 21 years from July 1.

"As per instructions of the EC, a special drive will begin on July 1 and conclude on July 31 and preparatory exercises is being taken with regards to schools and colleges where we have launched programmes for enrolment," state Chief Electoral Officer F Kharkongor said here.

He said the state election office has projected about 1 lakh plus new voters and majority of them are in the East Khasi Hill district.
 

"At present our enrolment is over 17,19,000 and those who will be turning 18 years or over will be covered in the special drive," he said.

Of the new voters, about 15,000 of them are in Nongkrem constituency (in the district), while there are about 6,000 new voters in others constituencies, he said.

The CEO said he has already held a meeting with the deputy commissioner and EROs on the entire process.

Kharkongor said the EC is also proposing to have Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the next Assembly elections in Meghalaya scheduled in 2018.
