A 17-year-old speech and hearing impaired student drowned in an abandoned swimming pool here.

The district collector suspended two staffers of the government hostel in which the student stayed.

Sohanlal Chadar, hailing from Madhya Pradesh's Tikamgarh district, yesterday drowned in the Sanjay Tarun Pushkar Swimming Pool, an abandoned municipal facility in Pari Bazar area, Shahjahanabad police station inspector Upendra Chhari said today.

Chadar scaled the 10-12 feet tall boundary wall of the pool to enter it, he said.

He said that Chadar was studying in Class VII of a government school, for the speech and hearing impaired, at Idgah Hills.

Following the incident, Bhopal district collector Sudam Khade yesterday suspended hostel warden Pramod Mishra and watchman Kisanlal Raikwar for neglecting their duties.

"The warden and the watchman should have kept an eye on the boy and not allowed him to venture out of the hostel," the collector said today.

Khade said that he had written a letter to the Bhopal Municipal Commissioner to take action against the officials of the swimming pool as well.

"The pool should not been kept filled with water when it has been closed for around six years now," he added.
