Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today directed the Jharkhand government to speed up filing of charge sheets against arrested Maoists at the earliest.

Reviewing the steps taken to control the ultra left wing extremism in the state, Shinde said efforts should be made to speed up filing charge sheets against the Maoists arrested in the recent past, according to an official communique here.

Shinde's directive assumes significance to prevent Maoists from obtaining bail following failure to file charge sheets in time.

Asking to fill up vacancies at the level of sub-inspectors in direct recruitment drive, he said at a meeting that there should be a police station near every security camp, apparently as a backup for the security forces in their fight against the Maoists and extremists of other splinter groups.

The meeting was attended by Governor Syed Ahmed and several top officials of the state.

During his day-long visit, the minister visited Maoist-affected Latehar to take stock of Saryu Action Plan, a project to develop several villages hitherto lagging behind in even basic amenities due to extremism.

Jharkhand is currently under President's rule.
