Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a Special Police Officer (SPO) and sacked him for allegedly attempting to rape a mentally-challenged woman in Kathua district, police said today.

Raj Kumar, who was part of a patrolling party, attempted to rape a mentally-disturbed woman under the influence of liquor in Dayalachak area of the district late last night, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Mohan Lal said.

The attempt, however, was foiled by the locals, the SDPO said.

"The SPO was disengaged from services and arrested immediately", he said, adding that a case has been registered against him.

Also, Havaldar Sardari Lal, who was head of the patrolling party, was suspended for lack of supervision, the SDPO said.

"Department inquiry has also been initiated against him", he said.
