Jammu and Kashmir police has regularised the services of a special police officer, who saved the lives of his colleagues by throwing away a grenade lobbed by militants inside their vehicle in a north Kashmir town.

The militants had lobbed a grenade inside a security forces' vehicle in Sopore town of Baramulla district which could have led to many casualties but an alert special police officer (SPO) saved many lives by throwing away the explosive.

Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said on twitter that he has "issued instructions" for the SPO's absorption in the J&K police, who saved many "precious lives" by exhibiting alertness.

The DGP's tweet came in response to a tweet by former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, who had demanded that the SPO's service be regularised.

"This brave SPO should be rewarded for his presence of mind by immediately regularising him in @JmuKmrPolice," Omar had said.

Three security personnel -- two SPOs and one CRPF jawan -- suffered minor injuries in the grenade blast that took place yesterday.
