Besides apprehending 27-year-old Bavanla Upender from his residence in Hyderabad yesterday, the Cyber Cell of city police also picked up his father Tirupathi Rao for allegedly abetting the crime, they said.

Upender, a B Tech graduate, befriended the victim, who hails from Visakhapatnam, through social networking sites Orkut and Facebook and they soon exchanged their mobile numbers and photos, police said.

A few weeks back, Upender proposed the woman to marry him but she rejected his proposal saying she wanted to pursue her studies.

Upender then started sending abusive mails to her along with her morphed photos and threatened to upload them on the social networking sites, police said.

Upender's father allegedly made a call to her father demanding a ransom of Rs 25 lakh for not sharing his daughter's photos.

"He also warned the woman's father from marrying her off to anyone," police said.

She lodged a complaint at Kancharapalem police station on October 3 and the case was transferred to the Cyber Crime cell.

The accused were produced before a local court here which remanded them in police custody.
