'Spy' dies, family refuses to cremate body

A man who was jailed for 18 years in Pakistan on charges of spying today died at Khehra village here but his family has refused to cremate the body, demanding fulfillment of promises made by the government.

Rahi, 60, was jailed for 18 years in Pakistan on charges of spying.

The family of Rahi has refused to cremate him till their demands are met.

Batala Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sourab Arora visited his house to pacify the family members who were demanding a government job for his son and other benefits which were not given to him since his release from Pakistan in 2005.

Rahi was said to be debt-ridden. He was admitted to Guru Ram Dass hospital in Amritsar, but his family was unable to bear his treatment expenses and they brought him back without medical assistance.

Rahi had taken a loan of Rs five lakh to run his family and construct his house and a tea stall but he could not repay the loan and since then, he was said to be in depression.

He was cremated at his native Khehra village after an assurance to provide a government job and financial assistance by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal.

Rahi is survived by his wife Sawinder Kaur and son Ranjit Singh.
