The container load of stainless steel and aluminum products which was imported from India has been identified as exposed to radiation while its distribution has been halted with immediate effect, the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) said.
The Colombo Port customs had drawn the attention of the AEA about the containers which had arrived on Thursday.
The AEA laboratory tests have proved that the cargo was carrying cobalt 60.
"We found that household products made out of stainless steel contained in the container was high of radiation risk. There are about 125 boxes which we stopped from being sent to the market. They were all affected by cobalt 60," Anil Ranjith a top AEA official said.
