Felix Perera, socialist services minister in the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government told a gathering in the central town of Kandy today that five members from the opposition UNP would defect to the government this week.

"This is because the government is serving the public well. The opposition is no longer attractive to opposition supporters," Perera said.

UPFA currently enjoys two thirds majority in the 225 member parliament, thanks to mass exodus of opposition UNP members.

Although it fell short of the 150 mark or two thirds majority in the last parliamentary election, the ruling UPFA currently enjoys the strength of 161 members.
