Ahead of a crucial vote in the UN Human Rights Council over the country's alleged war crimes, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has left for Japan on an official visit.

During the 4-day trip, Rajapaksa will meet Japanese premier Shinzo Abe, Sri Lankan officials said.

The trip comes as the US is set to move a new resolution against Sri Lanka at the current session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva for its alleged war crimes during the country's civil war that ended in 2009. Japan enjoys membership in the UNHRC.

The Sri Lankan President will also host a breakfast meeting for leaders of Japan's corporate and industry sectors as well as attend the inaugural ceremony of the Sri Lanka Business Forum.
