Lawyers marched from the legal district of Hulfsdorp in central Colombo to main railway station in Fort denouncing the government action against 54-year-old Bandaranayake.

Protesters held placards saying "Hands off the judiciary", "Courts stoned, judges threatened, CJ insulted, democracy stalled".

A motion of impeachment was handed over last week to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa alleging misconduct both official and private on Bandaranayake's part.

Her dispute with the government began when she ruled in September that a key financial bill needs endorsement of the island's nine provincial council prior to being approved in national parliament.

The motion is expected to be placed in parliament's order book this week, paving the way for the appointment of a select committee.
