Sri Lankan Minister Velayudham Dayanidhi today called on former Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, here.

After meeting Karunanidhi, the Minister told reporters that it was a courtesy call.

"It is a courtesy call. We discussed about the current political developments in Sri Lanka," he said.

On January 30, India-Sri Lanka had held talks on voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan refugees in the country, within days of deciding to "re-engage" on the issue during a meeting between their foreign ministers.

Karunanidhi had slammed the state government for not participating and voicing its opinion at the meeting.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, "a conducive atmosphere does not prevail in Sri Lanka for Tamil refugees to return there." He termed the meeting premature and wanted it to be deferred.
