Srirangam records 82.54 pc voter turnout

The Srirangam Assembly constituency here recorded a high voter turnout of 82.54 per cent in a peaceful bypoll today.

Barring incidence of glitches in EVMs in some polling stations, which were corrected later, the electoral exercise was peaceful with enthusiastic participation of voters.

When voting ended at 6 PM, 82.54 per cent of the votes were polled, Election authorities said.

The Election Commission had made elaborate arrangements for the bypoll and polling stations.

A total of 29 candidates, including AIADMK's S Valarmathi, DMK's N Anand, BJP's M Subramaniam and CPI (M)'s K Annadurai were in the fray.

Over 1,600 personnel from para military forces besides local police were deployed for election duty today. The ballot boxes were being dispatched to counting centres.
 

The counting of votes will be held on February 16.

The bypoll was held to fill up the vacancy caused by disqualification of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa following her conviction in a disproportionate assets case.
