Ending speculation, the Jammu and Kashmir police today said the killing of a head constable of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and wounding of another jawan yesterday in Ramban district was carried out by militants.
The militants fled with two rifles of the SSB personnel after the attack at the camp of the paramilitary force outside an 8.5 km-long under-construction tunnel connecting Banihal town in Jammu province with Kulgam district's Qazigund, the gateway to the Kashmir valley.
"Yesterday's incident was a terror attack carried out by three militants at SSB camp in Banihal belt last evening," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ramban, Mohan Lal said, ending speculation about the incident which appeared mysterious initially.

While Head Constable Ram Praveshwas killed, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Shyam Sood was injured and hospitalised in hospital in Srinagar.
"The militants also sntached two rifles of the SSB men," Lal said, adding this was the first incident of militancy in the district in the past few years.
According to some reports, amobile phonewas recovered about one kilometre away from the incident side.
A case has been registered and investigation started, the police said.
Police and security forces have launched a combing and search operation in entire Banihal and adjoining hills to track down the attackers.
