St Xavier's wants to be varsity on PPP model

Eyeing university status, elite St Xavier's College in Kolkata wants to be run on a Public-private partnership (PPP) model.

"It will be proposed to be set up in a PPP model with the support of the state government and management of St Xavier's authorities," college principal Father Felix Raj told reporters here today.

He said a proposal to set up St Xavier's University, Kolkata, would be soon submitted before the state government.

To raise funds for various expansion projects of the proposed university, St Xavier's College (Calcutta) Alumni Association (SXCCAA) will organise a special fund raising programme in USA this year.
 

Two gala fund raising programmes are going to take place on October 7 in San Fransisco and October 10 in Los Angeles, Raj said.

In the meantime, the Jesuits have also started construction of a new college in the industrial town of Asansol which will commence teaching from this academic session (2015-16).

Set up by the archdiocese of Asansol, the academic activities will be managed by the Jesuit Fathers, who manage St Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata.

The college, which has been granted autonomous status and the power to award degrees, will also open a new campus at the premises of St Lawrence School in Kolkata.

It will have BCom department to start with in this year and the classes will take place in the afternoon after the school gets over.

"There will be co-education here having three sections of 70 students in each. Next year BBA courses are expected to begin in this campus," the principal said.
