Press Trust of India Coimbatore
: DMK treasurer M K Stalin will lead a protest meeting here on September 3 against Kerala government's move to construct a dam across Siruvani and also Tamil Nadu government's 'failure' to take any action against this.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of District DMK office bearers, led by former minister Pongalur N Palanisamy, blamed Tamil Nadu government for its 'failure' to respond to letters sent by the Centre and Kerala Government over the issue.

Considering this, the environment ministry had cleared the project during its meeting onn August 11 and 12, it claimed.

Though Kerala had attempted to construct a dam in 2002,it was forced to shelve it due to largescale protests from farmers and public as it would deprive drinking water and also irrigation for thousands of acres, in Tirupur, Erode and Coimbatore districts, the resolution said.

Moreover, the then UPA government, in which DMK was an ally, did not grant environmental clearance for the construction, it said.

Fearing that the entire region may become a desert once the dam is constructed, the party said it would hold a protest meeting here, in which Stalin, who is also the opposition leader will participate, it said.

More than 25,000 people from all walks of life, including farmers, public, political parties and social enthusiasts are expected to participate, it said.

Yesterday Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's urgent intervention for withdrawing a central committee's recommendation for an environmental impact assessment study on a proposal of Kerala government to build a dam across river Siruvani at Attappady.
