Upset over being allegedly stalked and harassed by a local youth, a teenage girl from Bhayander township here set herself ablaze, police said today.
According to inspector Arjun Shelke of Navghar Police Station, the 16-year-old victim was being followed frequently by a youth in the same locality, who claimed to be in love with her.
Disturbed by his alleged advances and fearing threat to her life, the girl took the extreme step this week after dousing kerosene on herself, police said.
The minor girl died on the spot.
The accused, whose identity was kept in wraps, was booked yesterday under sections 306 (Abetment of Suicide) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC but has not been arrested yet as further investigations are underway, police added.
