A woman was killed in a village here by her stalker after she refused his overtures, police said today.

Manju (21), daughter of Sucha Singh of Bahowal village, was allegedly assaulted with a sickle by 24-year-old Baljinder Singh in front of the house of a former sarpanch where she used to work. Manju died on the spot, they said.

Baljinder, who had a crush on Manju, had been stalking her for quite some time, police said, adding he was frustrated as the woman kept avoiding him.

A few days earlier, Manju had complained to the village panchayat saying, Baljinder had snatched her purse and taken her mobile phone while she was travelling to Mahilpur town. But, the matter was resolved after the two reached a compromise, they said.

Police said, Baljinder allegedly killed her out of desperation.

A murder case has been registered and raids are on to nab Baljinder who is still at large, police said.
