The Standing Committee Chief of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has requested the civic chief to reduce water cuts owing to satisfactory rainfall in the past few days.

Yashodhan Phanse, in a letter to MCGM Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said, "Due to poor rainfall in the catchment areas of the seven lakes, 20 per cent water cut was imposed in the city."

"However, in last few days, there has been satisfactory rainfall which has resulted in greater storage of water and henceforth, I request you to consider reduction in the water cut," he said.

Households in the financial capital are presently facing 20-30 per cent water cut, while commercial establishments are facing 50 per cent water cut since the last month.

On Sunday, the Modak Sagar lake, one of the water-bodies which is supplies water to the city, started overflowing following heavy rains.

Similarly, the Tulsi Lake, which also supplies water to the megapolis started overflowing on Monday.

As per a report of civic body's hydraulic department the total usable content in all the seven lakes, as on September 22, was 11.29 lakh million litres, inching closer to 14 lakh million litres recorded on the same day last year.
