State Election Commissioner Mira Pandey today called on Governor M K Narayanan and is understood to have briefed him about the security arrangements for next month's panchayat polls in West Bengal.

Pandey did not talk to reporters after the meeting with Narayanan.

Her meeting with the Governor came after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on June 5 that the Centre had expressed inability to send Central forces for the three-phase grassroots polls beginning July 2.

Banerjee said she had contacted three chief ministers to seek armed forces for ensuring adequate security during the elections in the state.

The state government had earlier sought 300 companies of Central forces for poll duty.

The Calcutta High Court had last month asked the state government to make up for the shortfall of security personnel by procuring forces from other states or from the Centre.
