State funeral accorded to longest serving MLA of Meghalaya

Meghalaya government today accorded state funeral to its longest serving legislator and a hill state movement leader, Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, who passed away on Friday last.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and a host of cabinet ministers and party workers paid their homage during the funeral at his village at Mawkyllei in West Khasi Hills district where thousands of supporters, well-wishers, friends and family members had assembled.

The mortal remain was later buried as per Christian procedures.

The 86 year-old founder and President of the Hill State People Democratic Party died of pneumonia, septicaemia and multi-organ failure at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) at Mawdiangdiang near here on Friday.
 

A three-day state mourning was also observed as a mark of respect for the legislator.

He as considered as one of the strongest voices campaigning against mining of Uranium in Meghalaya.
